UESP Contest Winners!

We are excited to announce the winning schools for UESP’s 5-29 Day read-a-thon! Thank you for your participation during this contest, as well as throughout the year. The contest was neck and neck up to the very end.

The two winning schools are:

Jackling Elementary from Granite School District
Northlake Elementary from Tooele School District

Congratulations to these schools!

We would also like to remind all of you that UESP has generously offered a $25 matching contribution for new accounts opened on 5-29-15.

“Also in honor of 5·29 Day, UESP announced it will provide a $25 matching contribution to any new Utah resident account owner who opens a first-time UESP account for a first-time Utah beneficiary on May 29, either online at uesp.org or by submitting an Individual Account Agreement (form 100). Contribute $25 or more to the new account to be eligible for the UESP match.
To meet the requirements for a $25 matching contribution from UESP, new accounts opened and contributions made online at uesp.org must be received on May 29, 2015, by 11:59 p.m., Mountain Time (MT). New Individual Account Agreements submitted by mail, fax, overnight carrier, or in person must be received at UESP, State Board of Regents Building, 60 South 400 West, Salt Lake City, UT, 84101-1284, by 5 p.m. MT on May 29, 2015. Individual Account Agreements (form 100) are available for download at uesp.org or by calling 800.418.2551 toll-free. Applicants should be sure to enter the promotion code MAY29SAVE4COLLEGE on the account agreements.”

If parents have questions about UESP, here is some information about how it works.

“Earnings on contributions to a UESP account grow deferred from federal and Utah state income taxes. Withdrawals used for qualified higher education expenses are exempt from federal and Utah state income taxes. Qualified expenses include tuition and mandatory fees; required books, supplies, and equipment; and certain room-and-board costs at any university, college, or technical school in the United States or abroad that participates in federal student financial aid programs.
In 2015, a trust or single Utah taxpayer who files a Utah state income tax return can claim a 5 percent tax credit on contributions to a UESP account up to $1,900, for a maximum credit of $95 per qualified beneficiary. Spouses filing jointly can claim a 5 percent tax credit on contributions up to $3,800, for a maximum of $190 per qualified beneficiary. In order for an account owner to claim the credit, the beneficiary must have been age 19 or younger when designated as such on the account. If this requirement is met, the account owner can claim the credit each year a contribution is made for the life of the account.”

Thank you for your participation, and have a wonderful summer!

Using Road to Success on a "Smart Device"

We have had many people ask about an "app" to log reading time on Road to Success. We do not have this feature yet for our site, but we DO have some ideas that will help younger kids log easily!

The mobile view for www.RTSUTAH.com is fabulous and extremely user friendly. It can be accessed through any browser on any smart device.

A feature we'd like to share with you today is adding the browser to your home screen. This creates an image that LOOKS like an "app". Students can easily click it & go straight to www.RTSUTAH.com to log time!

Luckily we have both iPhones and Androids in our office. You can see the detailed instructions for both below. If you have another device that it doesn't seem to work on... please let us know! We'd love to help.

iPhone (or any Apple product):

1. Go to www.RTSUTAH.com in the browser of your choice. (Most iPhones already have Safari, but other free browsers are also available in the app store.)

2. Click the "send" button

3. Click "Add to Home Screen"

4. Save with the title of your choice & click "Add"
... You'll now be able to click on it just like an app!

Android:

1. Go to www.RTSUTAH.com in your desired internet browser

2. Click the 3 "setting" dots in the top right corner

2015-2016 School Year
- We will begin gathering school information & agreements soon. When you receive the documents please fill out updated information for next year and send it to us at meganw@rtsutah.com or fax it to 801-428-1977.
- This year the indoor tracking banner will NOT be included in print materials unless you specifically want it. Please be sure to mark this option on both the agreement & information sheet so we can give you the correct materials!

UESP
- We will have special guests from Utah Education Savings Plan with us at the Spring Forum Meetings. They will be giving out 2 UESP certificates to each school. These are fabulous prizes that have a high redemption rate.

Faculty & Staff Certificates
- These will be given out at the Spring Forum Meetings. If you have no way of attending any of the meetings or sending a representative you will need to pick the certificates up at the RTS Office in Downtown Salt Lake. Contact meganw@rtsutah.com to set up a time Monday-Friday, 9 am - 4:30 pm.
- If anyone from your originally submitted list does not receive a certificate please notify us by e-mail.
- These are in a different format this year. We are providing Faculty ID Cards that must be presented to redeem each offer.

Prize Wheel
- Only teacher compatibility is available. However, there are still MANY Ways to implement this new feature throughout the school.
- The "Print Slips" feature is still available, which is extremely convenient.

How-To:
Log in as a teacher
Select the correct classroom
Click “Reading Slips”
Select the Week
Click “Select Eligible”
You can also hand-select students who aren’t automatically selected
Click “Launch Prize Wheel”
Check that entries are correct
Scroll down for settings
Click “Go to Wheel of Prizes”
Click “Spin!”
Click “Spin!” again to choose multiple winners
Click the arrow under the selected name to see a list of winners & entries

Prize Wheel Settings:
•Spin Duration:
•How long the wheel spins – can be adjusted for smaller/faster drawings
•Load Duration:
•Time it takes to load names – if there aren’t many students set to a faster load time
•Remove Winning Entries
•Similar to if drawing by hand – removes the winning ticket
•Remove Unique Winners
•Removes ALL tickets with the student’s name so each student can only win once

Ways to Implement:

- Prize Wheel Within Each Class -

Teacher spins the wheel once a week then submits one name to go into the Grand Prize Drawing
•Benefits:
•Teacher’s discretion to make sure it’s students who consistently log that are included in the grand prize drawing.
•Fun weekly awards for students – keep them involved & excited!
•Admin gathers names & puts them into a spreadsheet
Use Random Name Selector website to draw a winner

- Narrow it Down by Classroom -
•Make a Classroom in the school that includes all class names
•Use the wheel to decide which class
•Use the wheel again to choose a student within that class
•Can do the original class decision before the announcement
•Select all eligible students within that class
